Gulnar Begum
is a Brand & popular name in Pashto music. Gulnar Begum's voice was

when Gulnar Begum's song came, the whole cinema hall would be in frenzy and

Gulnar Begum
was born in 1934. Her father's name was Sher Akbar.
There are different
views about her village and homeland. Some scholars of Pashto music and researcher
believe that Gulnar Begum was a resident of Swat and was married in Marwat
area. Some people say that Gulnar Begum was a resident of Banosai , resident of
bannu district of kpk.
According to
the authentic sources, Gulnar Begum was a resident of Swat area and had
migrated to Peshawar with her father and family as a child. Her husband name
was Obaidullah resedint of bannu district. And after her death she was buried
in Bannu and his grave is still in Bannu Cemetery.
According to
reports, Gulnar Begum did not start singing at a very young age and initially
she would sing at village weddings and then she came to Radio Pakistan Peshawar
center where she started singing regularly and soon became very popular,and
soon she make a name and fame in the
whole Pashtun homeland.
Gulnar
Begum's father's name was Sher Akbar and she had three brothers and one sister.
Her sister's name was Bibi Begum. One brother's name was Badr Khan and the
other brother's name was Ajab Khan. Gulnar Begum was also called Gulnar Begum
and would be called Shirina at home.
When Gulnar
Begum grew up, her father married her to a man from Marwat named Obaidullah.
Obaidullah was known in his area as Haji Dilawar who living in bannu district
of Kpk.
Gulnar Begum
was Obaidullah's third wife. Obaidullah's other wife Dilshad Begum was also a
singer but her songs are not available in recorded form.
Gulnar Begum
had three sons, her eldest son Javed and another son Jalil and the youngest son
Saeed. Among Gulnar Begum's sons Saeed had a master's degree in Urdu literature
from the university.
Gulnar Begum
had a very sweet voice from Allah. For the first time in 1954, Gulnar Begum
came to Radio Pakistan through the efforts of Arbab Rashid Ahmad Khan Dehqaan
and recorded her first song in the studios of the radio station in Peshawar.
Whenever Gulnar Begum's voice was first aired on Radio Pakistan Peshawar
Center, people loved her and gave her a standing ovation. And then began Gulnar
Begum's singing journey which continued till the year 1905.

recorded for Pashto films, which have become very popular.
She has also
recorded hundreds of songs for Radio Pakistan. Gulnar Begum was known as Lata
Mangeshkar in Pashto at that time.
There was a
time when any movie that featured Gulnar Begum's recorded songs would be a big
hit in the cinema and a movie that did not have Gulnar Begum's songs would
fail.
Most of the
Pashto moviegoers would go to the cinema hall for Gulnar Begum's songs, and
after the release of the film, Gulnar Begum's song cassettes would be sold in
large numbers in the market.
In Pashto
films, Gulnar Begum's songs have been posturized on Yasmeen Khan, Zeba, Musrat
Shaheen, Sunita Khan, Babra Raj, Shahnaz and a number of other film actresses.
Her voice had a magical effect that made her very popular in Pashto music in a
very short time.
When Gulnar
Begum has been sang, other Pashto singers like Kishwar Sultan, Mashooq Sultan,
Dilshad Begum, Mehjabeen Qazalbash etc. were also present at that time but they
did not get as much fame as Gulnar Begum did. The voice of Khyal Mohammad Ustad
was also very popular with Gulnar Begum.

belonged to a poor family, initially she have problem with one eye, which has continue
eight years. At that time, Gulnar Begum had no money for eye treatment.
In a radio
interview with Gulnar Begum, she said that before the advent of radio, I used
to listen to radio and listen to Bacha Zarreen Jana's songs and I used to study
and learning. , And Sabzali Khan's voices were very pleasing. Gulnar Begum said
that my family was not interested in singing but when I got married so my
husband's sister named Gohar Begum and she used to sing on the radio and she
became interested in my singings. Then a radio producer named Arbab Rashid
Ahmad Dehqan came to Bannu and told my husband's brother that I needed a female
singer, so my husband's brother told him that my brother’s wife named gulnar
have interested.
When Dehqan
sab came to meet with me, my husband refused to sing. But then my mother-in-law
said that you have permission and after that Rashid Ahmad Dehqan Saib came again
to my house and I joined him behind the scenes. They gave me mice and I
recorded two songs for them and they were broadcast on Radio Pakistan and
became very popular.In response to a question, Gulnar Begum said that the first
song I recorded for the radio was:

Gulnar Begum, she did not know the number of songs she has sung for radio in
her life. She has sung tens of thousands of songs before. It includes tapaai,
waziri, songs, ghazals, charbetas, and mesraiezi songs, but most of them are mesraiezi
songs.
Apart from
radio, Gulnar Begum has sung hundreds of songs for Pashto films, songs for her
first film of her life; songs for popular Pashto film (Dara e Khyber), these film
songs were became very popular.
Gulnar Begum
was not educated so her song would not be remembered very soon. Whenever a poet
wrote a new song, he would give it to Gulnar Begum and she would memorize it
and then record it.
Aside from
radio and movie songs, she did not sing for TV because she would hide her body
and cover herself, which is why she did not sing on television.
Among the
radio singers, Khayal Mohammad, Kishore Sultan was Gulnar Begum's favorite

Whatever
songs Gulnar Begum sang were considered super hit Pashto songs, and there was
such magic in her voice that when she shouted at the song, all the people would
be silent and listen to her. In fact, her voice was a guarantee of success for
